Dynamic Depth Photo – Field Companion App

Developed for photographers, by a photographer.

A photographic field notebook with practical tools for the decisions you make before, during, and after a shoot. Field Companion is being developed to bring scouting, planning, camera choices, and reflection into one connected Android workflow.

The app has reached the prototype stage. Work continues on reliable location and conditions data, clearer controls, and the flow between saved scenes, shoot plans, and journal entries. It is not yet a public release.

From finding a scene to understanding the photograph

Each part of the planned workflow has a specific purpose:

Scout
Keep a photograph of a promising scene alongside your intent, shooting position, and access notes, so a return visit starts with useful context.
Plan
Bring the scene, location, date and time, equipment, and shot list together. Keep intended settings distinct from what you actually used.
Field tools
Work through depth of field, hyperfocal distance, and neutral-density exposure choices with visible inputs, units, and explanations.
Journal
Record the photograph, your choices, what worked, and what you would change. Connect the result to its original plan and use the experience to guide your next shoot.

Planning around light and conditions

Development also covers location-based Sun and Moon planning, useful weather context, and direction information. The goal is to distinguish current conditions from a future planning preview, and to make the source and timing of a reading understandable.

These features are still being tested on Android. Location, weather, and compass behavior will be verified before they are presented as dependable field readings.

Connecting field practice with the website

Field Companion is planned to connect practical decisions with the lessons at Dynamic Depth Photo. A focus or exposure question in the field should lead to a relevant explanation; a lesson should give you something specific to try on your next shoot.

That connection will begin with contextual lesson links. For example, a scene plan can lead into field practice, an ND exposure choice into low-light and long-exposure learning, and a journal reflection into reading a photograph. Shared account access and cross-device record synchronization are not established features of the prototype.

What comes next

The next development work focuses on reliable startup and data handling, readable field screens, an unobstructed journal editor, and testing on a real Android device. Screenshots from the developing app will be added here as the work progresses.

A public download and release details will follow when the app is ready. In the meantime, explore the Photography Learning Center and put the lessons into practice.
